Once again, new bills in the Legislature are taking aim at early start datesfor school districts. When should school start? How should calendars bedecided?Background: Local school districts like having control over their calendar.Some like to have a fall break, so they need an earlier start. Others pointout that they get more instruction days before the TAKS test by startingearly. But a report last week from the state comptroller's office says earlystarts are much more expensive. The extended school calendar accommodates the realities in today’s’ economy - it is almost impossible to take two-three weeks vacation at work. The current school calendar, with more holidays during the school year, allows parents to spread out their vacation days and spend more time with their children without compromising their job security.
