Once again, new bills in the Legislature are taking aim at early start datesfor school districts. When should school start? How should calendars bedecided?Background: Local school districts like having control over their calendar.Some like to have a fall break, so they need an earlier start. Others pointout that they get more instruction days before the TAKS test by startingearly. But a report last week from the state comptroller's office says earlystarts are much more expensive. The extended school calendar accommodates the realities in today’s’ economy - it is almost impossible to take two-three weeks vacation at work. The current school calendar, with more holidays during the school year, allows parents to spread out their vacation days and spend more time with their children without compromising their job security.

Rumor mills are churning about who will and who won't run in the upcominglocal elections. What are you looking for in local candidates? What issueswould you like to be part of the debate this spring?

W e need candidates that can articulate a Texas 2020 plan – a clear road map to how Texas can become the most prosperous state in the Union by 2020. They should envision a state rich in culture, very diverse, and the gold standard for education, environment and employment. Share ideas that can provoke and engage the voters.
